A downloadable game

Do you have what it takes to become the Midnight Challenger?

Race around the track Downtown Loop in this demo.

YOU WILL NEED A STANDARD X-INPUT CONTROLLER TO PLAY THIS GAME.

Controls are what you'd expect, plus B & left shoulder to shift. The game is still far from even a complete vertical slice, so, y'know - expect bugs, glitches, the odd crash, and possible memory leaks.

This is fantastic, great work getting this done with GameMaker! Would love to get this running on a CRT in  pixel mode :)

I'm guessing there isn't analogue steering at the mo? I'm using a NegCon and steering appears mapped to the D-Pad.

Playing Midnight Challenge using a real life NeGcon huh? I must say, I am very honoured :)

There is indeed analogue steering (and braking/accel with triggers), but it maps directly to the left stick of an x-input, 360-style controller. In theory, if you could get the NeGcon's 'twist axis' to register as an x-input controller's left stick, horizontal axis, it *should* work (though, I have heard the NeGcon's rotation doesn't translate 1:1). Best of luck with it, any more questions let me know :)

Oh, and if you do get it running on a CRT, awesome - I'd love to see it!

Thanks for the heads up, I'll try and give the NegCon another go and if I play on CRT i'll try and get a vid over :D

Got the Negcon working, felt like RRV! really enjoyed the different handling on the two cars, which is one of the things I love about RRV, the small but diverse car selection.

I'd like to talk about providing music or collaborating on this game, I tried sending a message on Twitter/X but it didn't get seen :) do you have a discord account?

Im really enjoying this so far, Fun combination of what seems to be Ridge Racer, Dayton USA, and a hint of SEGA Rally. I played the time trial for a few hours to see what  I could come up with time wise and Ive got this so far.

Thank you for the fun experience and can't wait to play more. =)

The only small problem that I see is that it seems that the mercury is better than the comet by a long shot, otherwise the control is perfect and is alot  of fun.

Really enjoying what the game has so far!

A solid overall experience, complete with 360 degree drifts!

Just a small thing I notice: There seems to be no deadzone for Joystick controllers, so the slightest drift will push the car sideways. But aside from that, little to complain about in this little demo!

Love this game. Been playing the beta on my steam deck. Only issue ive had is the car veers slightly to the right when not touching the controls. Might just be an issue on the deck. Otherwise, great work!

Hey dude your game is pretty good, i'm waiting for some updates and a Android port

I'm looking forward to what's going to come from this! The UI is nice, the music is good, and the drifting mechanic feels super intuitive and I really enjoyed using it!

been thinking for years that the ridge racer gameplay style needs to make a comeback. great work!

I can tell that you're a huge Ridge Racer V fan.

Great Demo, hope you finish the game soon!

Mr. Sujano over at YouTube recommended me this project. I'm glad I played this cause I needed something to scratch my Ridge Racer itch.

I like the attention to detail in the HUD especially since each car has its own gauges. I do have two critiques though. I would like an additional 5 seconds on the checkpoint timer, please. I'm literally sparing 2-3 seconds when I finish my 3 laps. #2 I would like customized controls, I prefer using the triggers on my controller when it comes to racing games.

Overall, I had a good time and I can't wait for the final release. Also, if need any additional music tracks for your game, I can help out. Just let me know.

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it! The timer is certainly quite strict, I think it's my SEGA influence showing, heh. I'd be happy to make it more lenient - the final game should have adjustable difficulty for both the time limit & rival speed/aggression.

And yep, customised controls are a full-release target (I'll also include keyboard controls soon). If you mean analogue triggers, though, they should work without any changes necessary, so please do let me know if triggers aren't working - I'd like to look into it.

Thanks again for the kind words and suggestions! :)

Great demo, the controls and graphics are spot on. I'll look forward to the final release!
